Our Stealth High Brightness LCD Monitor products have continued to be one of our most popular peripheral products. Over the past few years we are finding that people want to deploy an LCD into high ambient light environments. Example applications we have been involved with include; public space kiosks, private yachts, oil rigs, digital signs and outdoor advertising.
Stealth high brightness LCD monitors are available with up to 1600 Nits of brightness depending on the model and size of LCD. The high brightness is achieved through CCFL backlight and inverter control. There are some manufactures that promise extraordinary brightness levels through film enhancement. It has been our experience that film can make a significant difference however they fall short when direct sunlight is involved.

GE has unveiled a successful demonstration of the world’s first roll-to-roll manufactured organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting devices.
In layman’s terms, the OLED is similar to how a newspaper is printed. This technique should help substantially drive down the cost of OLEDs which is currently reserved for
14″ or smaller television screens costing thousands of dollars.
“Researchers have long dreamed of making OLEDs using a newspaper-printing like roll-to-roll process,” said Anil Duggal, manager of GE’s Advanced Technology Program in Organic Electronics. “Now we’ve shown that it is possible. Commercial applications in lighting require low manufacturing costs, and this demonstration is a major milestone on our way to developing low cost OLED lighting devices.”

LCD panels are everywhere these days, even in your kitchen fridge. Although they are excellent for many applications, for some they just don’t cut it. A typical LCD monitor produces a maximum brightness (white light) of about 200 to 350 nits. This is fine for most desktop and indoor applications where the ambient lighting conditions are optimal.
Over the past few years we have seen an increased demand for LCDs that will work in high ambient lighting or direct sunlight conditions. If you plan on using an LCD outdoors you will need a minimal 1000 nits of brightness.
Stealth offers a number of high bright LCD products ranging in sizes; 12”, 15”, 17” and 19 inch diagonals with brightness levels up to 1600 nits. Many of the applications we support are for outdoor or direct sunlight use. Our anti-corrosive stainless steel bezel stands up to the elements and can take a hose down due to its NEMA 4X seal.
Typical customer applications include:
• Human Machine / Operator Interface
• Process Control & Factory Automation
• Marine/Mobile & Transportation
• Refineries and Power Generating Plants
• Outdoor Use, Advertising
• Digital Sign Applications
• Security, POS & Commercial Kiosks

Back in November, we donated an XO Laptop to a child in a developing country as part of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project. The concept was to give one – get one free allowing us the opportunity to take a close look at this revolutionary PC. The ultimate goal is to get a low cost entry level machine into the hands of a child who normally would not have the opportunity.
As expected the notebook is extremely basic in design and performance. What did surprise us is just how rugged the construction is. We have seen expensive notebooks less sturdy then this little baby.
The LCD screen works in both direct sunlight and darkness. When compared to any entry level notebook the visuals do fall short in terms of viewing angles, contrast ratio, brightness and color. Overall the unit is pretty impressive when you weigh in the price vs. what you get. It certainly won’t provide any performance or productivity benchmarks however.
