Over the past two years one of our industrial grade keyboards (model 2000-DT-TB) has gained a bit of a reputation appearing on many internet blogs as “the world’s most expensive keyboard”.

There’s been plenty of head scratching trying to figure out why it costs so much compared to a regular desktop keyboard. What most of these bloggers fail to realize is that this keyboard is geared towards a market they are totally unfamiliar with.

The model: 2000-DT-TB is a specialized keyboard which is fully sealed (NEMA 4X) and encapsulated in stainless steel to be used in rough and tough hostile industry environments. Stealth rugged keyboards are used primarily to provide a degree of protection against corrosion, windblown dust and rain, splashing water, and hose-directed water; and to be undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure.

Nevertheless its created some interesting buzz and as the old axiom goes, the only bad press is no press. You can see some of the blog articles here:

Here’s a flashback of a very popular product we used to build in the 90’s.
It was a clone of the original Compaq machines that were everywhere and kept the chiropractors busy.

The Stealth Transportable PC featured a monochrome mini CRT (optional color) and the Intel 80386SX Processor which ran a blazing 16MHz. This portable machine (Um I mean luggable) featured lots of ISA expansion slots and was very popular amongst our test, measurement and PLC programming customers. Can you imagine lugging this baby through airports today?

According to Microsoft’s Vista Blog, they have just rolled out Vista SP1 Release Candidate (RC).

This release is now available to all of its SP1 beta release testers, subscribers to TechNet and the Microsoft Developer Network. The plan is to make the test software available to the public next week.

Did you know that Microsoft Windows Vista can be downgraded to XP or even W2K? Depending on the type of license you own you may have the rights to user older versions of the operating systems.

What is a downgrade?

To Microsoft, “downgrade” explains the licensing rights it grants to older operating systems. Downgrade does not mean the process for rolling back from Vista to XP, since there isn’t such a procedure. Well not in the generally accepted use of “upgrade.”

Microsoft’s downgrade rights allow owners of some versions of Vista to replace it with Windows XP or Windows 2000 without having to pay for another license. In effect, the license for Vista gets transferred to XP. Think of it as a swap, Vista for XP, but not as an extra license. Microsoft’s end-user licensing agreement (EULA), says you can’t have both Vista and its downgraded XP installed at the same time on the same or different PCs. You make your decision; it’s one or the other.

To a large mass of users, “downgrade” is synonymous for reverting back to an older version of the O/S. Or simply put, dumping Vista and returning back to XP.
